It's been no secret around here that I've been cooking healthier and buying lots of fresh fruits/veggies. There's still that 8 or 9 pesky pounds I'm trying to shed but more than that I want my family to eat healthy for just general health purposes. I think there's a saying that goes like "you are what you eat". I've been reading health articles off and on. If I see something that I like or think would be a healthier more, I put it into practice. One of the big debates now is regarding milk..... whole milk, 2% milk, 1% milk, organic milk and natural, unprocessed straight from the cow milk. Enough to drive a person crazy. We've been drinking 2% milk forever. I've recently been buying a gallon of 2% and a gallon of 1%..... pretty much alternating what we drink. If my husband had his way, we would still be drinking whole milk but that ain't happening. :) We drink at least 2 gallons a week and sometimes a third. Yeah! Lots of milk around here.
For the most part, TH (The Hubby) just goes with the flow. He'll complain every now and then that I don't ever make homemade french fries. But really, he eats whatever I cook/buy. UNTIL, the other night......
"Get me a glass of milk on your way back please," TH requested as I walked out of our bedroom. I had just purchased for the first time ever organic milk earlier that day. I pour him a glass and take it back to him. After one sip he explains, "WHAT is this?!?! Did you buy 1%?!" I roll my eyes and immediately reply, "News flash babe. You've been drinking 1% for the past month off and on.......every other gallon to be exact."
"That would be organic milk," I softly mumbled hoping he wouldn't hear. "Well, don't buy it again. I'll drink 1% but not this crap." I absolutely died laughing. I did not tell him how much it cost at this point. The next night he complained because he didn't have "real" milk in the house..... I had to listen to him fuss once again about buying organic. I said I would be okay with going to 1% all the time.... he said, "That's fine! No organic though." I then let him in on the little secret..... the COST! Oh my word.
If we drink our normal alotment of milk a week and I bought organic, I'd be spending almost $20 a week in just milk. AND the baby hasn't starting drinking it yet. I'm all about making healthier choices but I would rather spend $10 on milk and the other $10 on some other food item if need be.
Healthier choices mean generally I spend more $$$$ at the store. So, I'll continue to do so but some things will just have to be the lesser of the two evils and not necessarily the "best" choice. So.... don't worry my sweet husband.... you're milk is safe for now!

Do you mind if I ask why you drink so much milk? Even before I was married and WAY before I was part of a dairy-free household, I didn't drink it past the age of 10 or so and my parents didn't ever ask me to. In fact, our holistic pediatrician doesn't believe in us drinking any cow/goat milk at all...you can get calcium in other forms/ways. Is it just because you are used to drinking it?
My husband likes whole milk as well but I will not buy it. I usually go back and forth between 1% and 2% to be fair but recently I've been buying all 1% and he hasn't said anything.
I believe you can still eat healthy without eating organically. There are a few things I might do differently when our budget expands but I believe everything in moderation is key!
